Dr. Andrea Romano is Assistant Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Barcelona and a Schumann Fellow at the University of Münster for 2024-2025. He holds a master’s degree in Law (2009) and a PhD in Theory of the State (2014), both from La Sapienza University of Rome. He has undertaken several research stays in Switzerland (University of Fribourg), Spain (University of Castilla La Mancha and Institute of Self-Government Studies) and Germany (University of Hamburg).

Alongside his academic career, he has worked as a practitioner in the area of international protection with various institutions, including UNHCR and the Italian Ministry of the Interior. He is the co-editor of the book “The External Dimension of EU Migration and Asylum Policies: Border Management, Human Rights and Development Policies in the Mediterranean Area” (Nomos, 2020), and has published book chapters and articles in international journals (e.g., The More Favourable Provision Clause in EU Migration Law: Expanding Fundamental Rights through National Discretion? European Journal of Migration and Law, 2024). His research interests focus on migration and asylum law as well as constitutional comparative law. During his stay at the University of Münster he will primarily be developing a research project focused on gang-based asylum claims and the international as well as the EU refugee law regime, within the Chair for International Public Law and International Human Rights Law led by Prof. Dr. Nora Markard.
